Chrisitian Elinisa

My name is Christian A. Elinisa. I am a second year Masters student at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology in Arusha, Tanzania. I undertake a Master’s course in Information and Communication Science and Engineering specializing in Information Technology Development and Management.

My research is based on applying deep learning to automatically detect banana plant diseases using a mobile application. In my research I am developing instance and semantic image segmentation deep learning models based on Mask R-CNN and U-NET algorithms respectively to detect and segment Black Sigatoka and Fusarium Wilt Race 1 banana diseases at early stages. I am developing a mobile application using Flutter framework that will deploy the best model and will run in both Android and iOS platforms. This mobile application will assist farmers to detect these two banana diseases at early stages and provide

recommendations to them to mitigate the effects of these diseases in their farms, so that they can rescue their yields and avoid loss.

I have a bachelor’s of science in Information Systems Management and I have done software development in web-based systems and mobile applications.
